Cleanings for Healthy Teeth and Gums

Healthy teeth and gums are an important part of a beautiful smile. It is important to get your teeth cleaned once every six months during your routine appointment.

? Why get your teeth professionally cleaned?

Professional teeth cleanings by our hygienists help to fight plaque, which is the major cause of tooth decay, serious gum disease problems, and gingivitis. Preventing plaque and getting rid of it as soon as possible are major components to preventative dental care.

Daily brushing and flossing removes plaque, but not the way professional cleanings do. We are able to get into the small crevices and areas where your toothbrush cannot go. This is oftentimes the place where plaque forms, which can cause further dental problems if not removed properly. Tartar also accumulates near the gumline, but professional teeth cleanings can remove tartar, too.

Just remember, it is much more cost effective to see your dentist once every six months for checkup appointments than it will cost to fix major dental problems due to non-existent preventative oral care measures.

? What to expect during a regular dental cleaning appointment

We typically perform an exam and a professional cleaning during the same appointment. Our hygienists will perform a thorough teeth cleaning, which is known as a prophylaxis (or “prophy”).

He or she will use special tools to remove tartar and plaque from your teeth and gum line. The hygienist can also perform the scaling technique, which will remove tartar below the gum line. Oftentimes, the last step is polishing for a beautiful smile.

? How often should you go to the dentist for professional cleanings?

Washington Smiles and the American Dental Association (ADA) recommend professional teeth cleanings once every six months for adults. However, if you are prone to tooth decay, gum disease, or tartar build up, our dentists may recommend more frequent appointments.
