Considering Dentures or Partials

What are Dentures? Why Do I Need them?

Custom dentures are removable replacement teeth. They can be either a full or partial set (commonly called “partials”). At Washington Smiles, we offer InPlace™ overdentures. If you don’t have healthy teeth, a complete denture may be the solution, but if you need to replace only a few missing teeth, a partial denture may be proper.

Reasons for Dentures

  • Your face may sag or develop a sunken look, making you look older than you are.
  • Replacing missing teeth may help you chew better.
  • Getting dentures helps you speak better.
  • Dentures help strengthen your facial muscles.
  • Dentures are made from acrylic resin material and are strong and durable.

Types of dentures

Complete dentures: Complete dentures, also known as full dentures, replace all the teeth in your mouth. They can also be used when a person’s only remaining teeth are unhealthy and must be removed.

Partial dentures: Partials are used when some teeth need to be replaced. The healthy teeth act as strong anchors to which the partial denture firmly attaches with metal attachments.

Conventional dentures: This type of complete denture is made and placed after the remaining teeth have been extracted and the tissue has healed. This may take approximately six weeks to several months. The patient may wear a “temporary” or an immediate denture during this time.

Immediate dentures: This type of denture is placed immediately after the dentist has removed the remaining teeth. They may require more office visits and raise costs for the denture procedure. However, after they are placed, immediate dentures can help reduce the initial swelling after teeth removal. Once healing is finished, the dentures will be relined to ensure proper fit, or they can be replaced entirely with a permanent conventional denture.
