The Whitening Bar
To remove years of stains in just one session, turn to Washington Smiles for professional teeth whitening services.

Why do teeth become stained or discolored?
There are many contributing factors to stained teeth. As we age, minerals penetrate the tooth’s enamel, which causes discoloration. Factors that cause tooth discoloration and staining include:
- Age
- Natural staining and discoloration from foods and beverages
- Tobacco use (cigars, pipes, smokeless tobacco, cigarettes)
- Certain foods and drinks include red wine, dark sodas, tea, coffee, etc.
- Certain medications (tetracycline and some antibiotics)
Depending on your teeth and situation, you may choose in-house whitening, take-home whitening, or both. Whichever option you select, Washington Smiles will use teeth whitening products approved by the American Dental Association to guarantee your safety.

How does teeth whitening work?
A bleaching gel (hydrogen and carbamide peroxide) is typically used to whiten teeth professionally. It is applied directly to the tooth’s surface. This gel helps remove stains and makes teeth appear whiter and brighter without harming them.
The professional teeth whitening procedure takes one to three hours, depending on the type of whitening chosen and the severity of the stains. At-home whitening procedures can also be used. Patients who choose this route usually see results within three to four days after the first use, with the final result taking approximately two weeks.
Washington Smiles offers both in-office and take-home whitening options. Depending on certain factors, you may need either one or the other method or both, which our dentists can discuss with you.
